Setting up Workstations to use the Squid Proxy Server

Each machine in the network needs to be set up to use the Squid proxy server. There are two main steps involved. First configure the web browser to point to the proxy server. Second is to lock down the workstation so that the end user cannot undo the settings put in place. Below are screenshots of the proxy settings for both the Netscape browser and the Internet Explorer browser. Also discussed are ways to lock down the workstation in Windows 98, 2000, and XP.

If setting this up in Windows 2000 or XP be logged in as administrator.

Select Edit-> Preferences. The proxy server below is located at missourirain.org and the port is 3128

If setting this up in Windows 2000 or XP be logged in as administrator.

In Windows 98 Select Tools->Internet Options->Connections Tab->LAN Settings->Check the box that says Use a prosy server. The proxy server below is located at missourirain.org and the port is 3128. If Proxy settings need to be set up on Windows 2000 or XP follow the directions for adding and locking proxy settings in Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Lock Proxy Settings in Windows 98: [top]

To lock the proxy settings in Internet Explorer:

  1. Open a DOS prompt
  2. At the Command Line, type cd \windows\system
  3. Type move Inetcpl.cpl Inetcpl.pro

This will disable the internet options control panel. Be sure the proxy settings are set before the control panel is disabled. To re-enable the control panel rename the file to the proper name:

  1. Open a DOS prompt
  2. At the Command Line, type cd \windows\system
  3. Type move Inetcpl.pro Inetcpl.cpl

Lock Proxy Settings in Windows 2000: [top]

Make these changes as the administrator logged into the local machine.

The instructions below will enable and lock the proxy settings for Internet Explorer.

To enable the proxy settings for Internet Explorer:

  1. Click Start->Run
  2. Type gpedit.msc then click OK
  3. Select User Configuration then Windows Settings then Internet Explorer Maintenance.
  4. Double-Click Connection.
  5. Double-Click Proxy Settings.

The Address of proxy currently is missourirain.org and port is 3128. Check the box that says Use the same proxy server for all addresses.

To lock down the proxy settings for Internet Explorer in Windows 2000:

  1. Click Start->Run
  2. Type gpedit.msc then click OK.
  3. Select User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer.
  4. Choose the disable changing proxy settings option. Double-Click it.
  5. Check the Enabled radio button.
  6. Click OK.
