Changing Passwords from Within Windows Workstations

Changing passwords in Windows machines is very easy. This web page addresses changing domain passwords and not changing local machine passwords although the process is much the same. Eventually mandatory password changing will be enforced but currently the passwords remain static until changed. Below are the ways to change passwords in Windows 98, 2000, and XP.


Windows 98: [top]

  1. Open the Passwords control panel.

The Change Windows Password will only change the local machine password if one is even set.

Change Other Passwords

  1. Select the Change Other Passwords to change the domain password.
  2. Choose Microsoft Networking and then click Change.

Select Microsoft Networking

  1. Enter in the old password, then the new password as directed.

Change Password

  1. Click OK.
  2. A success message will appear.

Windows 98 | Windows 2K | Windows XP

Windows 2000: [top]

  1. Log in as the user that needs the password change.
  2. Simultaneousley hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys.
  3. Select Change Password.
  4. Follow the directions to change the password.
